Blogging and Micro-Blogging

Blogs (shortened from the original “web logs”) are one of the most commonly discussed and utilized forms of Internet communication. As an interactive method of communication maintained by individuals for themselves and on behalf of corporations, blogs can be part of your existing website or simply be the entire website by themselves. The content theme of a blog usually relates to a particular interest of the blog’s creator or can be the equivalent of an online diary. The content usually is presented in a reverse chronological order and should be updated frequently with content that is of interest to the reader and not be allowed to become stagnant.

Today there are over 100 million blogs in the “blogosphere” on the Internet, and the number of new blogs grows everyday. To put that in some perspective, if following a single blog is like watching a channel on TV, your TV would have over 100 million channels to choose from! There is no Internet arena more competitive for viewer traffic. If you want to have your website join the “blog revolution,” Mary Pomerantz Advertising can make it happen.

Blogs are one aspect of social networking and, like all other aspects, were not originally created or envisioned as a way for businesses to sell you their products or services. Businesses have been attempting to successfully use these online social inventions and have created blogs called corporate blogs. Some corporate blogs attempt to directly or indirectly sell their product or service but the most effective corporate blogs so far seem to be ones that simply attempt to inform or open a channel of communication with their customers and potential customers.

Two of the most popular software blogging platforms used to create blogs are Wordpress and Drupal. They are both Content Management Systems (CMSs) and Mary Pomerantz Advertising can create your blog using either platform. Wordpress is better known, but also has more limitations and offers less diversity in site design. Drupal does not have these same limitations, but is far more complex and takes more programming knowledge to implement.

Micro-blogging is essentially using very small blogs consisting of a collection of short posts. “Twitter” is even smaller than a micro-blog (and even more popular). Twitter limits its text posts to only 140 characters or less, which translates to a few sentences. Twitter is a service that anyone can sign up for that broadcasts through a multitude of different methods or applications. One example is web widgets. These are small applications of code on a website that show visitors continually updated information throughout the day. The benefit to the website owner is that they do not have to create anything, or maintain this continually updated content. Many users can even update this information using their cell phones, making Twitter resemble text messaging in the blog world.
