According to a recent article on CNN Money, employment fell to 8.9% last month, its lowest level since April 2009. In addition, the last 3 months have seen a full percentage point drop in unemployment – the steepest drop in 28 years. That is great news for job seekers, but also for businesses, as the wages from this group of newly employed workers begin to filter through the economy with increased demand for products and services.

In addition to the positive picture painted by the total numbers, the details look even better. Due to budget cutting at the state and local level, government jobs have decreased during this period – making the private sector’s job growth even higher than the total numbers suggest. The recovery in jobs has also been broad-based, with over 68% of industries adding jobs in the past month, the highest percentage since 1998.

This is welcome news to everyone, and, as the owner of two companies – Mary Pomerantz Advertising and TPG Staffing – I am particularly glad to hear it. It looks like the long winter of our “jobless recovery” may finally be ending, and I couldn’t be happier to greet the spring.
